Traffic Tickets & Municipal Courts

Got a ticket? Welcome to the club. Somewhere between St. Charles and South County, a police officer handed you a piece of paper with a court date on it, and now you’re trying to figure out what happens next. This page is your starting point.

What Is a Municipal Court?

Most traffic tickets in Missouri are not filed in “real” circuit court. They are filed in a municipal court run by the city where you got the ticket. The charge is usually a violation of a city ordinance, the prosecutor works for the city, and the judge is often a local attorney who holds court a few evenings a month.

That matters for two reasons. First, every court runs a little differently: different dockets, different prosecutors, different habits. Second, a “minor” ticket still goes on your Missouri driving record, can add points to your license, and can raise your insurance rates for years.

What Happens When You Hire Us

  1. We enter our appearance. We let the court know you have a lawyer, and we get a copy of the charges.
  2. In most cases, you don’t have to go to court. Your attorney appears for you, so you can skip the evening docket and the hard bench.
  3. We talk to the prosecutor. In many cases a moving violation can be amended to a non-moving violation, which keeps points off your license. We can’t promise any particular result, but we know what to ask for.
  4. We tell you the offer and you decide. Nothing gets resolved without your OK.

Common Questions

Can I just pay the ticket?

You can, but paying the fine is pleading guilty. On a moving violation, that usually means points on your license and a line on your driving record that your insurance company will find.

Do I have to go to court if I hire a lawyer?

In most municipal traffic cases, no. Your attorney appears for you. Some charges and some courts do require you to be there, and we’ll tell you up front if yours is one of them.

What if I already missed my court date?

Call us right away. A missed date can lead to a warrant or a license suspension, and it’s usually easier to fix sooner than later.
