Credit Counseling and Financial Management Courses
There are two bankruptcy classes you must complete to finish your case: a credit counseling course before you file, and a money management course after you file but before you receive your discharge.
These classes are easy, don’t worry. They’re required, but easy, and you may actually find them informative. Both are usually done online or by phone, and neither takes more than a few hours. Many companies offer approved courses, and I give my clients several to choose from.
Before You File: Credit Counseling Course
Before filing your bankruptcy petition, you must complete a credit counseling course. It has to be completed within the 180 days before you file. When you pay the provider’s fee, you’ll get the website or phone number and your login. Have a list of your creditors, your income information, and your monthly expenses handy.
After You File: Debtor Education Course
Before you receive your discharge, you must complete a personal financial management course. I’ll give you the information you need. If you don’t complete this course, you won’t receive your discharge.
The course takes about two to three hours, and it doesn’t have to be done in one sitting. You’ll set up a login that lets you pick up where you left off. There’s a short test at the end, and you’ll receive a certificate when you pass. If you’re a married couple filing together, each of you has to take the course.
If you’re a current client and need help registering for either class, call my office at 636-486-1093.
